On a
cold winter day in March 1997, my two friends John Mark, Kevin and I
were
given the opportunity to spend a day in Fr. Ron Cote's cottage by Lake
Erie.
After
dinner we tried to amuse ourselves by singing some rounds from John Mark's
memory.
To our
pleasant surprise we found out that our voices could also blend together
quite well.
It soon
became a hobby to sing & dine together. John Mark decided to call ourselves
the
Anacreontic Society after the one in London, England in the 18th century.
It is
a club named after the lyric Greek poet Anacreon (563-487 BC).
Our
favorite repertoire include mostly secular or sacred three part motets.
We have
sung a few songs composed by John Mark.
The
most service-oriented activity of our group has been the leading of the
Stations of the Cross
in songs
designed by John Mark who has been given a role in music within his priestly
vocation.
We have
done this for a few parishes in the Toronto and Hamilton Dioceses,
for
the Augustinian monastery at Marylake, for the St.Augustine Seminary
and
for the infirm and resident Jesuits at Manresa in Pickering.
Memorable
experience. However, with changing life demands,
we
have not been able to sing together since Lent of 2003.
